Book Club Review - The Children of Hurin

We had a pretty good meeting overall. There was a good deal of discussion; unfortunately, most were not that impressed with the book. The general consensus seemed to be that the book was hard to get into and that the book was not a complete work. That is, Tolkien did not, himself, complete this novel. It read a bit choppy. Please let us know how you felt about the story or the meeting by commenting below...

Update!

Last week was a total blast. And a blur at the same time. We did sucessfully teach, entertain, and feed 100 excited 4th and 5th graders from Oak Grove Upper Elementary. They were so much fun. My favorite moments were seeing the teachers race to finish drinking from the baby bottles and also seeing the disgust on the faces of the 4 kids who had to put their toes in chocolate syrup to make a picture. Good times :-) We do have some other things coming up you might be interested in...

Wednesday: 10:30 Family Story Time. This week's theme is Kevin Henkes books. In 2 weeks we'll have a special story time with special guest, Ms. Lee. It will be a Mexican style story time for Hispanic Heritage Month. Be sure to come wearing a sombrero! (just kidding)

Friday: 3-5:30 Family Game Day. Maybe you missed the last one, but come this week. The games are fun and I am ready to play "Candy Land" if anyone wants to challenge me.

October 22-26 Support the Eagles Week. We will have everything from the USM dance team, USM coaches and athletes, a major leauge baseball player, and USM give aways and activities. Check with the librarians for a detailed schedule.

That's all for now. Feel free to add a comment. Also, before I go, is anyone else enjoying the cooler mornings and evenings? I was just wondering. I am loving it. Go for a walk, ride your bike, soak it all it. And stop by the library while you're out :-)

Friends' Reception (last night)

Here is a photo from the Friends' Reception we had last night. As you can see from the photo, we had a chocolate fountain! Overall, the fountain was thoroughly enjoyed.
In attendance were two of our Board Members, several Friends members, and various library patrons just stopping by to say hello. We had about 45 people attend said reception.
Tomorrow we have our "Chocolate Party" and movie night.
We are also having a 10-year anniversary open house for The Lamar County Library System in October. More on this to follow later…

Working on a busy week...

Next week will be a very busy week for us program wise. We have a reception for the new manager (me) and new staff that will be hosted by our Friends on Tuesday, September 11 from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. We also have our Family Story time beginning on Wednesday, September 12 at 10:30 a.m. Family Story time will continue until the month of December. Thursday, September 13 is our BIG day. We will have our Chocolate Party in honour of Roald Dahl's birthday and we will be watching the movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory later that same afternoon. Attending our Chocolate Party will be the winners of our design your own chocolate bar contest. We should have four classes with about 25 kids each at the party. The party will consist of fun, games, and of course, chocolate (namely a chocolate fountain). We will update you on the party as we can. Well, that is about all for now...
