Art by Ruby and Curtis Graham

The Oak Grove Public Library will feature various paintings from “new” artists Ruby and Curtis Graham. Ruby and Curtis live in the community of Oak Grove and have only recently acquired an interest in art. While Ruby and Curtis are very young artists, they are both 80 years old. Their art will be put on display for June 06, 2009, a day that also happens to be their 36th wedding anniversary.

The recent interest in art started with Ruby about a year ago as a therapeutic exercise. Ruby had a stroke in early 2004 that left her right arm and hand partially paralyzed. Recovery of the use of the right arm and hand has progressed slowly, but continued efforts have yielded steady results. On a whim, Ruby started drawing and painting in an effort to diversify her physical therapy exercises. This turned into a very active hobby.

Inspired by Ruby’s artwork, Curtis begun to paint and has a few works of his own. They have collaborated on various pieces of art. The focus of the pieces varies, but most involve some type of nature theme.

Please feel free to stop by and browse the works of Ruby and Curtis while on display at the Oak Grove Public Library. Who knows, you just might be inspired!

The Food Club meets on the second Monday of every month at 6 p.m. Each month there is a theme and we all prepare dishes to meet that theme.

In June (2009), the theme will be "Be Creative." That is, you have an open slate when creating a dish for the meeting.

I hope to see you there...

Harry Potter in June and July...

Do you love J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series? If so, I am sure you are eagerly awaiting the release of the movie version of the Half-Blood Prince. In anticipation of its release, we will be showing the first five films based on Rowling’s novels.

Join us for refreshments and great movies! Each movie will be shown at 3:00 pm in the Juvenile Reading Room at the library. The first three films are rated PG and the fourth and fifth are rated PG-13. We will show the first film, based on the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, on Friday, June 5. Friday, June 12, we will be watching the second installment, based on the second book in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The third movie, based on the book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will be shown on Friday, June 19. Friday, June 26, we will be showing the movie based on the fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. We will wrap things up on July 10 with the fifth film based on the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

As if that were not enough, three Harry Potter theme bands will also be here in June. They will perform for us on Saturday, June 13 at 4:00 pm. The Whomping Willows and Justin Finch Fletchley are joining us all the way from Rhode Island, and the Moaning Myrtles are coming from New Jersey. You can learn more about these bands by visiting their MySpace pages.

If you have never read the Harry Potter series, I highly recommend it. You will not be able to put it down once you begin.
